Claude essentials for business owners

How to use Claude well in one working afternoon.

A practical guide to choosing useful work, giving Claude the right context, judging the result and turning what works into a repeatable business asset.

The short version

Good Claude use is a management skill.

DelegateChoose the job

Give Claude work with a clear outcome—not a vague invitation to “help”.

DescribeSet the brief

Supply the context, constraints, examples and definition of done.

DiscernJudge the work

Check facts, fit, omissions and whether the answer solves the real problem.

DiligenceKeep accountability

Protect sensitive information and approve consequential actions yourself.

Most owners do not need to learn dozens of prompting techniques. The highest return comes from five habits applied to one recurring piece of work. Start there. Add tools only after the workflow is useful in a plain conversation.

01 / Delegate

Choose work that repeats and has a visible finish line.

Claude is easiest to manage when you can describe what “done” looks like. Begin with preparation, analysis or drafting—not a decision you would never hand to a new employee.

  • Good first task: happens weekly, consumes time and produces a document, recommendation or organised set of actions.
  • Weak first task: rare, poorly understood, politically sensitive or impossible to review.
A useful filter

If a capable new hire could do the work after seeing your inputs, standards and two strong examples, Claude may be able to help. If you cannot explain the job, improve the process before automating it.

02 / Describe

Create a reusable Claude workspace.

Create one Claude Project for one function: customer support, marketing, sales proposals or weekly operations. Add only the current material that changes the quality of the work.

  • Your current offer, audience and business priorities.
  • The policy or procedure relevant to the job.
  • Two or three examples you would happily use again.
  • Project instructions covering tone, boundaries and required output.
Context beats repetition

A project description alone is not working context. Put the actual knowledge into Project Knowledge or the conversation. Keep one source of truth and remove stale versions.

03 / Describe

Use one reusable brief for recurring work.

This Aenta framework packages the few details that most often separate a useful result from a generic answer.

  • B — Business outcome: what should be true when the work is finished?
  • R — References: which files, facts or examples should Claude use?
  • I — Instructions: what steps, rules and boundaries apply?
  • E — Example: what does good look like?
  • F — Format: what must the finished output contain?
Customer support example
Business outcome: prepare a reply I can approve in under two minutes.
References: use the refund policy and tone guide in this Project.
Instructions: answer the customer's actual question. If the policy is unclear, write NEEDS REVIEW instead of guessing.
Example: match the approved replies in Project Knowledge.
Format: subject line, reply under 140 words, then a private one-line note explaining your reasoning. Do not send anything.
04 / Discern

Manage the work through a short review loop.

Do not judge Claude by whether the first draft looks fluent. Judge it by whether the final result reaches your standard with less effort.

The review instruction
Before drafting, list any missing information and show me your plan. After drafting, check the result against the brief, identify the weakest part and revise it once. Flag every fact that needs human verification.
  • Is every factual claim supported by the supplied material?
  • Did it answer the business problem, not merely complete the wording?
  • What is missing, unusually confident or inconsistent with your experience?
  • Would you approve this if it came from a new employee?
05 / Diligence

Save the lesson where the next task can use it.

When the output improves, capture why. Update the Project instructions, replace the weak example, clarify the policy or save the finished prompt as a template. Claude can also place substantial reusable work in an Artifact.

The compounding move

Do not let a useful correction die inside one long chat. Put it back into the instructions or source material. The business improves when the next conversation starts ahead of the last one.

Four real workflows

Start with work you can inspect in minutes.

Weekly brief

Turn exports into decisions

Provide the current and prior reports. Ask for material changes, likely explanations, missing data and five questions for the weekly meeting.

Support queue

Prepare replies by exception

Use approved policies and examples. Draft routine replies, then separate anything ambiguous, emotional or commercially sensitive for a person.

Proposal

Turn discovery into a scoped draft

Supply the call notes, current offer and proposal example. Ask Claude to identify gaps before drafting the problem, outcome, scope and exclusions.

SOP

Convert a recording into a process

Provide a transcript. Ask for the trigger, owner, inputs, steps, exceptions, quality checks and the point where judgment is required.

Keep human control

Approval is part of the workflow, not evidence the AI failed.

Claude can prepare consequential work, but the accountable person should still approve payments, legal or financial conclusions, employment decisions, public claims and promises to customers. Do not add sensitive client, employee or financial information unless your plan, permissions and business policies allow it.

Earn autonomy gradually

Begin with read, analyse and draft. Add connected tools only after the underlying workflow is stable, observable and easy to reverse.

Your first afternoon

Learn by improving one real task.

Do this with work already on your desk. A real constraint teaches more than ten practice prompts.

10 minChoose the recurring task and gather the relevant source material.
10 minRun the BRIEF and review the first result against your standard.
10 minCorrect it, save the useful instruction and decide whether to repeat it.
Official sources

Go deeper with Anthropic.

This guide is an independent Aenta interpretation of Anthropic's public training and product guidance, expanded with practical operating patterns. Product capabilities and plan availability can change.

Before you trust the output

Ask for evidence, uncertainty and a usable next step.

A confident answer is not proof. For consequential work, verify claims against the original source before acting.

Evidence“For each material claim, point to the supplied source or label it unverified.”
Uncertainty“List missing facts, conflicts and assumptions before recommending action.”
Decision“Give me the next action, its owner and what would change the recommendation.”
From practice to operating leverage

Find the first Claude workflow worth making repeatable.

Describe where your week disappears. Aenta will assess whether the work needs a better brief, a Claude Project, an AI Operating System, an automation or no build at all.
